Song Meaning: "Those Obvious Words" by Jung In

I never thought I'd write about a meaning of a song because I believe that as much as the artist makes it his prerogative to what he wants to write, the listeners also keep it their prerogative to interpret what he wrote.

However, I received several messages asking me the meaning of the song "Those Obvious Words" performed by Jung In and written by Kang Gary of LeeSsang.

Here is the official music video:

Here is the English translation of the lyrics:

Under the faint lights, the music played and you and I were so shy
After some hesitation, you tightly held my hand and said
* I will be by your side until always, don’t worry
I will always think of only you and treat you well, I love you
** I wanted to believe those obvious words
Because I loved you a little more than you loved me
I wanted you so much
Because from the moment I first saw you, my heart was yours

It didn’t matter what kind of person you were
If only you stayed by my side
You often told me, “let’s never break up”
* Repeat
** Repeat
“After time passes and we meet again
I’ll never let you go” even those words, those words
** Repeat
It didn’t matter what kind of person you were
If only you stayed by my side

Interpretation

The story is told from the point of view of the girl. That's pretty obvious.

"Under the faint lights, the music played and you and I were so shy
After some hesitation, you tightly held my hand and said"

These lines are pretty explanatory. They were shy at first but the guy mustered the courage to make the first move. Eventually, he promised:

I will be by your side until always, don’t worry
I will always think of only you and treat you well, I love you

He promised that they will be together and he will never leave her. Now, the subtle brilliance of its lyrics come in. The lines prior to these are all a set up to the whole point of the song which is told through the succeeding lyrics.

I wanted to believe those obvious words
Because I loved you a little more than you loved me

The girl is saying she knows that what he is saying about loving her forever and never leaving her is not true. He either doesn't mean it or she knows that he will eventually fall out of love even if he doesn't want to. However, he wanted to believe those words because she loves him more than he loves her.

The word "obvious" is what adds more depth into the song. It means that the things he was saying were expected, necessary and, to a certain extent, natural. Those are the obvious words of a lover, words of someone in love NOW.

I wanted you so much
Because from the moment I first saw you, my heart was yours

She chose to believe that he will stay by her side forever because she just wanted him so much.

"It didn’t matter what kind of person you were"

These lines may be interpreted different ways. It may mean that she just really doesn't care about his damaged past or she is saying that she knows he has done this before but she it doesn't matter to her.

"If only you stayed by my side
You often told me, “let’s never break up”

This part is key. At this point, the songwriter reveals that the girl is already separated with the guy. "If only you stayed by my side" means she didn't. Hence, the word "if only". She's saying "If you only you didn't leave me, the past wouldn't matter to me."

She said he kept on saying they will never separate and went on to repeat the chorus. After the chorus comes the powerful conclusion.

“After time passes and we meet again
I’ll never let you go” even those words, those words"

The guy told her that they just need a break and when they figure things out, they will come back to each other and he will never let her go. Again, he is making a promise. He probably believes his own promise and has intentions of keeping but the girl used "those words" which means she knows he won't be able to keep those promise BUT she might still choose to believe it.

Music Video

Many were confused with the music video, which was directed by Ryu Hyan Kyung. Music videos don't necessarily follow the storyline of the song. However, in this case, it did.

The MV opened with the a sad girl which is consistent with the song. When the song was being sang by the girl, they were already separated. It went on to recollect their happy memories.

The scenes when they were talking in the wedding and the guy (played by Tiger JK) looked away (around 1:25 of the video above), you can see a certain sadness in the girl's face because she knew that the promised he made won't pull through. He will leave her.

In that scene when they were lying down on bed and his back was to her (2:27 mark), you can see that he has grown apart. Unlike the previous scenes on the same bed where he was affectionate towards her, he is turning away from her. His face shows he has already pulled away and he wants to separate and she knows it.

In the next scene, she tries to reconnect with him. She looks at him but he didn't look back.

It was followed by the two of them talking over coffee. She eventually stood up and walked away. That's the moment they broke up.

The last scene is from the past. They didn't get back together. It was being projected on the wall, consistent with the other scenes when she was remembering their past.

Conclusion

The song's lyrics has some subtle brilliance. It didn't require some highfaluting English. The words were basic. Any third-grader would get it but it is in how these simple words were put together to reveal the story that makes it great.

There are very few songwriters who can do it. Write a whole complete story with but several lines.

If you have any song and/or music video which you want interpreted, email us sath.cruz@gmail.com or leave us a comment. I'll do my best to interpret it.
